Overview of Idea

TweetHaus, a collaboration with FLUX Foundation and community partners, is a public art + ecology project focused on citizen science and interactive learning. We foster community through the design, construction and installation of artful bird habitats and public pathways in urban environments.

The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?

Funding will allow us to build on the success of last year’s pilot program in Oakland, CA – fulfilling our mission to create a new generation of makers, public artists, and citizen scientists in this year’s planned collaborations with elementary school students, local cities’ Department of Parks and Recreation, and expansion to more schools, parks, and museums. Integral to this process and funding are the creation of our interactive website, mobile app, and remote birdhouse monitoring devices, which will enable the project to create a virtual community that draws participants into the local natural world. Funding will help procure class materials, markers, paper, paint, wood, hardware, tools, electrical equipment, and happy kids!

I photographed the pilot program birdhouses and was BLOWN away by the creativity, depth of knowledge and innovation afforded the kids in the program. Bravo Tweethaus, Bravo!

There are many things to love about this project, but what really speaks to me is the level of thought and care the project organizers have put into developing this creative idea. They're weaving in local Oakland talent and innovation, including students, artists, educators, Parks and Rec experts, technology organizations, naturalists, scientists, makers, and beyond. Now more than ever, we need this kind of approach to catalyze the wellspring of talent and positive energy we have here in the city of Oakland.

This is a fabulous concept that connects kids to environmental issues in concrete ways, to one another, and to their own power as creators and caretakers.

During the pilot program, Oakland Parks & Rec LOVED the idea so much, they expedited approval to allow us to install two birdhouses at Mosswood Park. And now they want us to work in lots more parks in Oakland! We're thrilled to be integrating into the urban environment of our favorite city!

Really amazing idea. And over the past 2 years I've personally seen the Flux Foundation come up with amazing art and design, get community involved, and execute against timelines and budgets. It's pretty rare to see an artistic group with strengths in all these areas!

Very impressive. I'm assuming the program could be modified for other birds in other areas of the country/world? Awesome.

Yes! TweetHaus is an open source project. That our modular and flexible curriculum can reproduced in other communities and with other threatened species is a long-term goal that will serve to expand awareness of the diverse needs of the animal and plants that share our not-only-human world. It is our hope that TweetHaus can be implemented by people around the country, making this kind of public art + ecology collaboration accessible to everyone!

This is SO neat! Kids getting exposed to this kind of art and technology earlier on is much needed...especially with budgets in the arts getting cut more and more. Looking forward to seeing the communities mapped and more cities involved.
