Overview of Idea

MiLES is an initiative that facilitates the transformation of vacant lots and storefronts in the Lower East Side, by listening, co-creating, and prototyping with its residents. The mobile stage will travel around in vacant lots and stores to promote art making in the community of LES, support us!

The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?

The $5,000 fund will be used to prototype a mobile unit. The mobile unit is a place for different cultural programs to take place by the community for the community.

212 lots and stores are vacant in the Lower East Side of New York awaiting gentrification, the dominate form of development that stifles the cultural richness of this neighborhood. The mobile unit of Made in Lower East Side engages the residents and multiple stakeholders through their usage patterns to extract innovative ways to occupy vacant sites. In essence, communities can book a vacant site by the hour to conduct activities open to their imagination. In the process, this incubates cultural production, artistic activities and provides economic opportunities for all.

So very exciting!!! And this is a magnificent alternative way to show what empowered human and social potetials/capital can achieve!!!! I would love to use this model in diversity communities and especially with the Roma groups I am working with...:)

This is a great idea! I really like that your actively involving and listening to the community and the residents who live in LES about which ideas to move forward with. Great example of community engagement and empowerment.

We have a few selected locations to start prototyping in: two public properties (one in Alphabet City and the other on Houston St) as well as a private property on Orchard St. We are also very actively looking for owners and landlords that would be interested in participating: by improving their utilization rates, the accumulative income of hourly and/or short-term bookings can match traditional monthly rentals.
