: @ArtsAtLarge
Arts @ Large is a non-profit arts education organization that provides sustainable arts experiences for public schools that lack access to quality arts education. Nearly 90% of the students in our program qualify for free or reduced price lunch and access to quality food resources is an issue.
We all know that maps help us to navigate from one destination to another but how can maps speak to these issues of justice and equity? This project will allow students from Milwaukee Public Schools to work closely with local cartographers, food experts and artist educators to explore their community by identifying the current food resources (community gardens, fresh food markets, etc.) as well as the lack of access to those resources (food deserts). Students will explore their city and develop tools that will inform their peers, community members and local public policy makers about the need for equal access to quality food in the city of Milwaukee.
