Overview of Idea

ReLIT is a unique reading and recycling program that brings free books directly to busy New Yorkers on the go. We collect used, unwanted books and give them out for free at major commuter hubs in the hopes of encouraging reading and revitalizing the love of books in this digital age.

The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?

Since 2009, ReLIT NY has collected and handed out almost 12,000 books! Every month we collect over 700 books and at every handout, we give out approximately 500. They are almost all taken within the hour! This goes to show the immense need for such a program in the city. But we can do more: more books reaching the hands of more people. This grant will help us:
·Accept all the large book donation requests we receive but cannot facilitate at present
·Expand our handout activities to under-served locations that are difficult to access
·Set up more book-drop boxes in more locations
·Increase the quantity of books we give out at each handout
