Inspired by my study abroad in Copenhagen, Sudokulør is a systematic approach to creating compositions based on applying color the numbers arranged in a Sudoku grid or puzzle. Through user interviews, this art seems to have potential as a bridge between the fields of STEM education and art.
The majority of the $5,000 will be used to fund a large interactive art piece that will be displayed in a high-traffic location of downtown Evanston:
The piece is, in essence, is a large LED display controlled by a touchscreen interface which allows users to create and share their own works based on the rules of this system.
Additionally, this work will analyze the user’s art (and display the results) with a number of approaches – using simple math, graph theory, and color theory.
Those in STEM usually seek to understand complex systems and can be turned off by the seemingly unintelligible nature of abstract art. Sudokulør appears to capture their attention because it can be appreciated both mathematically and visually.
