Overview of Idea

:

Asheville designers want to transform spaces into places, building community and boosting business through a mobile street art project known as creative placemaking. Transforming a space into a place “changes how we relate to our city and each other.

The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?

The Lexington Avenue parklet will be a pilot, existing for six months, and will help OPEN Asheville and the city determine design and need for any future placemaking projects. This project is basically converting two parking spaces into a usable area for Asheville citizens and tourists to simply sit, talk and enjoy the space. It will be created by local artists and incorporate colorful, creative seating, bike racks, tables and umbrellas that will enhance the space and encourage passersby to take in the city & culture w/o being forced indoors. Originating in the 1970s, place-making is a design strategy that emphasizes planning cities and public spaces for people — not for cars. The money will pay for the materials and local artists (see video)
