Overview of Idea

:

Flint Local 432 is an all-ages, substance free, non-profit music and performance art space located in Downtown Flint, Michigan. We've played host to thousands of local and national bands, and give access to music for local-area youth, who are often excluded from live music due to age restrictions.

The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?

We recently re-opened our doors in a new permanent space at 124 W. First Street. We received funding from various sources to help renovate the building so it was up to code and safe to occupy. However, the space is entirely composed of concrete surfaces, which dramatically increase sound level and decrease sound quality. Thus, we need additional funding to build strategic sound dampening in the space in order to improve the overall experience for event attendees. In addition, we currently use conventional tungsten bulb lighting which is very inefficient and expensive to operate for extended periods of times. We hope to secure funding to replace them with a modern LED lighting, thus reducing our carbon foot-print and monthly expenses.

Whether or not we win, I would like to thank you all for your support and your kind words here. This contest has let us reconnect with dozens of old friends of the Local; people whose involvement in some cases stretches back to the very first shows I helped out at in the mid-80s. The fact that you took some time out of your busy lives to cast a vote or comment here does mean a lot to me. Hearing from many of you whose lives were changed for the better by the time you spent at the venue means even more. Please keep in touch, I miss you guys.

We had a question about the scope of operations at the venue. Right now we are on track to serve about 12,000 youth in our first year back, and expect that to grow to 25,000/year by Year 3. Just for reference, this week alone we hosted a three day leadership conference for 40-50 inner city youth involved in service organizations, held a taping for a public access cable TV show featuring art and music, had several meetings of a year-long public art project, and will have two concerts this weekend with ten different bands and solo acts. Thanks for your support!

Like a lot of people commenting here, the Local 432 was a critical part of my high school experience. As a girl from a small town with few options, the Local provided a safe, exciting space for me to meet new friends, learn about civic engagement, explore music and art, and envision myself doing something more with my life than just following the crowd. In my travels since, I have yet to find something replicating the low-barrier, welcoming atmosphere, all-ages no-substance focus, and the amazing community of people who gather weekend after weekend to celebrate music. It is an important community resource, and I hope it remains and thrives in the future.

Thanks! We try to do as much as we can to foster talent and help teach bands about the music business. A band is essentially a small business and people don't realize how proper management of a band plays such a crucial role in its longevity/success. We appreciate your support!

Without this venue my life would be completely different. We played our first show here 10 years ago. We all worked at the venue volunteering every weekend. We don't want that to change one bit and change other people's lives by doing the same thing all over again. The money will help a ton, and we would put it to good use for the venue. Sound proofing, lighting and sound upgrades would ensure more bands come back to play, bigger bands hear how great it is and come out, and most importantly it's bringing a ton of people to downtown Flint to help boost the economy and the overall morale of a city with a negative stigma. Flint is a great place and the Flint Local 432 is a great beacon of hope. If it can come back, why can't Flint?

this venue provided something that is unheard of in our town, and most towns, a safe place to go enjoy time with friends. It formed so many huge things, bands, people, friendships and I can say that I don't believe I know anyone my age from our home that wasn't positively effected by this amazing place. Its an amazing opportunity for the youth of Flint to have the chance to form their own impact, their own safe place. I hope that EVERYONE sees what a place like this can do for the future of our town. I also hope that other places and people take something positive from the impact "our" own place provides. KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK TO ALL THE MEMBERS AND VOLUNTEERS OF THE FLINT LOCAL 432!!

The Local (an affectionate name for Flint Local 432) is an amazing community arts program. The people who run this substance-free, all-ages venue truly care about building up the Flint community and using the arts to engage youth who may otherwise have nowhere to go. The organization also uses their access to young people through music to promote programs that get kids off their computers and into nature, developing their talents in stage management, merch selling, and a variety of other skills. Through music, this organization does beautiful work!

I recently started volunteering at the Local after it reopened and it has been a fantastic experience! It is a wonderful space and they do much to help out the community by engaging kids and young adults in a positive environment that supports the local arts and music scene. Not only do they welcome any up-and-coming bands, but they also host a number of events during the Flint Artwalk for other good causes that also help the community to blossom. All the people that have worked to bring the Local back and continue to work hard give off such great, positive vibes and are genuinely beautiful people that want everyone to have a great experience and a fun place for kids to hang out. It makes me so very happy to see them doing something positive for the city and it makes me glad and thankful to be a part of it. The production improvements would be a fantastic and much needed addition to all the good that is already happening.

The Local isn't a venue. It isn't bands. It isn't the volunteers that learn how to run a venue. It is the kids that learn how to be a band. It isn't about the want-to-be band photographer. Or the person gives a shot at making flyers. Or the person who goes from just looking for a place to hang out and listen to music to volunteering to sweep the floors or pass out flyers. Its a community. Its a community that builds and grows together around a common theme. Not everyone will go on to work professionally in music, but I think we can all look back and say that the Local helped make us who we are today in a very, very positive way.

I first went to the Local when I was 13, when it was at 432 Saginaw St. It was the source of great times and friends. When I returned to Flint in 2001 most of my friends had left for other cities and states. The few that remained were much different than they were in high school. The community I re/discovered at the Local was very important to me and responsible for much of personal growth through a difficult time in my life. So, thank you Flint Local 432 for all your support and dedication!

The Flint Local 432 is a critical part of this community because it is the only music venue in Flint that truly reaches out to the community in ways that promote diversity and social justice. Not only does the Local throw awesome concerts, but they also provide programming that helps youth learn about various aspects of the music/arts industry. In addition, the Local partners with a number of non-profit organizations to host events that bring awareness to critical issues. The Local is important for a number of reasons and our city benefits greatly from this community gem!

I am a professional journalist and I cut my teeth in the field by interviewing traveling and local bands at the old Flint Local 432 space. Most of my friends and acquaintances sprung from being a regular during the good old days of the Local. The new space is a fantastic investment and, having been to a show tonight, I can see there certainly is room for improvement, particularly in the sound dampening and stage structure department. These funds will be crucial in helping the Flint Local 432 cultivate local bands into nationally/internationally touring powerhouses (see: The Swellers, Chiodos).

The Flint Local 432 taught me everything I know about being a musician and community. I've been all over the world playing shows, and two things that come to mind while touring are, "I am so glad I had the Local to get me where I am" and "I sure hope this town/state/country/island has something like the Local." Some good sound dampening would really encourage more bands as well as fans to roll through regularly. Also, LED lights are a lifesaver. Our last show there got a LITTLE sweaty. - Nick (The Swellers)

Thanks for all the kind words; showing up in a fundraising appeal near you soon! We know lots of folks have been checking out the video who are involved in some of the other arts projects in the competition. If there are cool local bands involved with your scene feel free to have them get in touch with us, we'd love to do some show trades with your town. If any of your visual or performing arts projects involve youth we'd be happy to look into hosting an exchange.

Flint Local 432 is the most effective community and arts-building effort I know in a town that critically needs both. By empowering young people who are passionate about the arts to get involved, learn and grow, “the Local” has been developing entrepreneurial cohorts of creativity in Flint for nearly two decades. The city’s vibrant music and arts scene is one often-celebrated artifact of the Local’s success, and it is giving generations of people a reason to come downtown, have dinner, see a show, and enjoy the community. Another, less celebrated, but equally important dimension of the Local’s influence however, is its engaged alumni base, which regularly assumes roles of leadership in the community. By making young people excited about growing up in and around Flint, while providing them opportunities to lead and create, the Local produces many of the area’s most energetic and capable leaders. They, in turn, are steering the city toward the arts, and not away from them (as is happening in so many other places).

I know I wouldn't still be in this community if it wasn't for the Local! It truly helped develop a sense of pride in Flint and a devotion to working toward improving it. You're absolutely right in stating that it's help produce some of the area's most energetic and capable leaders! Most people don't take this into consideration when examining the overall impact the Local has had on Flint. Great comments!

Great seeing everyone last week at The Swellers and tonight at Chodos. The fact that two bands who have been so successful on a national level still come back home to play definitely sends the message that we're doing something right.

I am from New Jersey and I just attended my first show at the Flint Local 432. It was The Swellers 10th anniversary show this past weekend and I was not only stoked to see my favorite band, but I was stoked to finally see this venue I had heard so much about. Arriving early I saw that Flint resembled places that I live close to in Jersey, but it seemed like instead of ignoring the issue like NJ does, the people of Flint are opening up businesses and making changes to better their city, like the Local. It was a great sight to see. The venue was clean, well managed, and it's a place that should have never been closed down. I'm pretty jealous my hometown doesn't have something like the Local. It's a perfect place for people to hang out at and get exposure to all types of music. It helps the community in more ways than one, and I can't wait to see another show there.

Volunteering at the Flint Local 432 was one of the best experiences of my life. Beyond the fact that I made the most amazing friends locally and across the country (friendships that are still strong after a decade), I learned so much by being a part of the staff. The Local truly believes in young people and not disregarding them because of their age, sometimes just the fact that someone has faith in your can make a total difference. There really are not words for how much this place has done. The people I have met through the Local are the most intelligent, passionate and talented people I have ever met.

The Local is a big part of my life. Thanks to the Local I have been exposed to many different types of music and have the chance to see the bands I would know nothing about otherwise. They also allow my club and I to do a lot of recordings at their venue which is crucial for us to get our name out there. The Local has been a very strong influence in my life and helped to make me a better person in my opinion.

I've spent some of the best years of my life at the Flint Local 432 playing in my old and 2 Chances Short. I don't know if I will ever enjoy being in a band as much as I did in 2cs. I know we sounded lame, but we enjoyed our selves. We were entertaining and that's all I ever wanted. I am proud to have done it with such awesome people and had such an amazing venue as the Flint Local 432. The club not only allowed, but encouraged myself and other younger teens to get up on stage and play music, make friends outside of their circle, and have a safe place to spend time on the weekends. There is nothing else you could ask an all-ages club to do, and I will do whatever I can do to support such a great place. I will always tell people that the Local helped raise me to become the person I am today, and I couldn't be prouder of this.

The Local is an incredibly important place for the young people of Michigan. It provides a safe, substance free environment for young people to hang out and for young bands to get a great start. It's great to see them open again and seeing them win this funding would be amazing as well.

The Flint Local is important to Flint & surrounding areas because it's a great place for kids to hang out & find good local bands. Most local venues around the area are very short-lived or are very low-key. The Flint Local has been around for years, always managing to push through the tough times. It is also well known to the area. The people at the Flint Local 432 always give every band a chance. A lot of venues won't let bands play if they haven't played shows before & the Flint Local gives them that chance. So, the Flint Local is home to small local bands, but they have also produced some very well-known bands.

The "Local" was crucial for me in my own personal development as a teenager. I listened to different music than the kids at my school and it was a place where I could meet like-minded people who shared the same interests. I had zero interest in going to football games at my high school, so this was a chance for me to socialize, come out of my shell, and experience something truly great. To this day, some of my best friends I met through the Local and I certainly wouldn't be the man I am today were it not for this important institution.
