Music is especially enriching for the Special Needs community. Our successful pilot program was with adults. Joy, as well as health and developmental benefits are proven. We now want to continue our hands-on experiential program with moderate to severely handicapped children in local schools.
Goals:
1. Bring an experiential music program using percussion, voice & body movement to 4 schools serving students with moderate to severe disabilities.
2. Adapt the program for each age group involved.
3. Include teaching staff to incorporate music in other areas.
We bring a teacher trained in the principles of Music Together to four class sites weekly. Three are high schools and the 4th is a preschool for autistic children. This is a reverse mainstream project where non-disabled students from a nearby school also participate. We have been received enthusiastically by teachers and students.
Our annual cost to continue this program is $5000, which breaks down to $5 per student per class.
