Overview of Idea

:

ArtVan a mobile arts therapy program that brings the arts directly into neighborhoods with the highest needs for social services. Youth create art on roller shades that represent their unique stories showcased by businesses that travel thru the 6 towns fostering cross-town and cultural understanding

The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?

$5000 will go towards the materials needed to bring the project to each of our neighborhoods in Bath, Brunswick, Lewiston-Auburn, and Biddeford, Maine (most of which see up to 25-30 youth/2hr session), the fuel needed to bring our colorful, ArtVan to each neighborhood and to transport the moving exhibits, and paid staff time to oversee and implement the project. ArtVan always brings the necessary materials to complete a project and guarantees the presence of a licensed art therapist and co-facilitating artists at each of its programs to help with not only the art making, but also to strengthen relationships, and connections with all of the youth it services while building larger community awareness and support in a non-judgmental way.

Good work! They've been at it for a while, know how to make a difference, and really do need more resources!

A young girl at the Maritime Apartments said it best, back when the artvan first started. A flyer was posted asking residents to comment on why such a project would be useful. She wrote, "Because art gives people hope."

I have always remembered this and it still inspires me today.

I've witnessed ArtVan help youth develop self esteem/confidence through art making. Hope, happiness, creativity, imagination, sel-expression... without these things there is no meaningful and effective education.

I cannot imagine a better organization for children in our community. I have watched it grow and expand since it's inception and cannot say enough good things about it.

this is a great program, my kids had a great time. In such a small community its wonderful to have a bright and fun place for children to get together to become creative. Aloha

I work for an organization that hosts ArtVan on a weekly basis and can attest to the powerful work they do within our community. Kids crave the outlet that ArtVan provides them and look forward to the environment created by this program. I love you, ArtVan, and look forward to working with you more!

I enjoy watching the children literally running after the Van when it comes into the neighborhood letting them know that it is time for making something fun !!.

The Van has been painted by the children and is a moving motif.

My children and I have benefited from this program. ArtVan provides a safe place for children to be children, allowing them to be creative as they wish. They receive positive verbal support from the staff and encouragement that boosts their self esteem !

It truly does take a village to raise a child, ArtVan provides that support in the form of Art.

ArtVan you ROCK !
