Two youth centers: Let's Go Jozi, located in inner-city Johannesburg, South Africa, and Houston Street Center in New York City's Lower East Side. will explore their communities, cultures, and connections through the production of murals and journals that will be exchanged.
The program will consist of simultaneous workshop sessions as a part of existing after-school programs at each of the centers. The five sessions will include journal/sketchbook prompts and free-draws, that seek to understand the nuances of meaning, perspective, and community across different cultures. The program will conclude in a collective mural in each program. Parts of journals will be reproduced and sent to the other youth center along with the completed mural. The final session will be a reflection period post-exchange.
